  9. to the installation and usage of the iView 1.0 browser for the
  10. Virtual World publication.  Please read this file completely before
  11. proceeding to install or use iView.

  33. 1. About Virtual World
  34.    ===================

  36. Welcome to the world's first virtual publication on a CDROM.
  37.  
  38. This pilot issue of Virtual World includes iView 1.0, an extremely
  39. user-friendly page-oriented browser which, amongst other things,
  40. simulates a page-turning effect to enhance the realism of reading
  41. the virtual publication.  You will find no buttons, menus, windows
  42. or dialog boxes that are so typical of today's CDROM applications.
  43. Instead, you will be able to use just the most simple commands to
  44. flip to the next or previous page, to the contents page or the next
  45. section.  To play or stop an audio or video embedded in a page,
  46. simply allow them to play or stop automatically, or click on them
  47. once to start and another to stop.  Refer to the "Using Virtual
  48. World" section for the full list of commands that you may use with
  49. the iView browser.

  64. CDROM Drive: Single-speed (150Kbs transfer rate), Single Session
  65. Sound Card : Required if you wish to hear sounds from the magazine

  81. 3. Installing iView 1.0
  82.    ====================

  84. It is extremely easy to install iView 1.0.  Use the following
  85. instructions:
  86.  
  87. 1.  Run Windows 3.1*.
  88.  
  89. 2.  From the Program Manager, click on the File menu item and select
  90.        Run...
  91.  
  92. 3.  Type:
  93.  
  94.         X:\SETUP
  95.  
  96.     at the prompt, assuming that your CDROM drive is drive X .

  98. 4.  Follow the instructions to install iView onto your harddisk.

  101. Notes:
  102.  
  103. - You will NEED Video for Windows 1.1* if you wish to enjoy any of
  104.   the many videos that are embedded in the Virtual World publications.
  105.   Please do not uncheck the Install Video For Windows 1.1* option if
  106.   this is the first time you are installing a Virtual World
  107.   publication.
  108.  
  109. - Use the Install Publication Icon option ONLY if you do not have
  110.   enough disk space on your harddisk.  This option merely creates an
  111.   icon in your Program Manager for the publication in the Virtual
  112.   Publications Folder.  If you change your video drivers or switch
  113.   resolution without the publication CDROM in your CDROM drive, you
  114.   will probably lose the icon picture.  Note that installing the
  115.   iView browser will take up less than half a megabyte of harddisk
  116.   space.

  118. - The pilot issue of Virtual World has been optimized for a screen
  119.   display of 640x480 resolution (with 256 colors).  Please change the
  120.   resolution of your display if you are using resolutions higher than
  121.   640x480.  This is to ensure the maximum readability of the magazine.
  122.   If you wish to retain your higher resolutions, the Virtual World
  123.   publication will be centered in the middle of your monitor.

  125. - If you have a high or true color card, it is recommended that you
  126.   use the 640x480x32K (or higher) resolution for your windows display.

  131. 4. Using Virtual World
  132.    ===================
  133.  
  134. The iView 1.0 browser comes with the following simple commands:
  135.  
  136. 1.  Before reading a publication, make sure you have installed it
  137.     properly into your windows environment using the above
  138.     installation procedure.  Check that the publication CDROM is in
  139.     your drive.  To read the publication, double-click on the its
  140.     icon in the Program Manager.
  141.  
  142. 2.  To flip to the Help page while reading the publication, press the
  143.     <F1> key.
  144.  
  145. 3.  The cover page will ALWAYS auto turn to the contents page if you
  146.     do not respond within half a minute.
  147.  
  148. 4.  The mouse cursor will change to icons that represent the function
  149.     of specific areas as you move the pointer around the publication
  150.     page.
  151.  
  152. 5.  To turn to the next page, move the mouse to the right border
  153.     region of the publication and click on the left mouse button.
  154.     Alternatively, press the <RIGHT> arrow key on your keyboard.
  155.  
  156. 6.  To turn to the previous page, move the mouse to the left border
  157.     region of the publication and click on the left mouse button.
  158.     Alternatively, press the <LEFT> arrow key on your keyboard.

  160. 7.  To enter the quick "browse" mode to scan the pages quickly, click
  161.     and hold on the right mouse button while the pointer is in either
  162.     the left or right border regions.  To momentarily stop the browse
  163.     mode, simply move the pointer away from either border region,
  164.     WITHOUT letting go of the left mouse button.  To re-enter the
  165.     browse mode, move the pointer back into either border region.
  166.     The browse mode will end only if you release the left mouse button.

  168. 8.  To flip to the contents page from ANY page, double click on the
  169.     left border region or press the <LEFT> arrow key while holding
  170.     down the <CTRL> key.
  171.  
  172. 9.  To flip to the next section from ANY page, double click on the
  173.     right border region or press the <RIGHT> arrow key while holding
  174.     down the <CTRL> key.
  175.  
  176. 10. To stop reading the publication, double click on the top or
  177.     bottom border region or press the <ESC> key.
  178.  
  179. 11. To toggle sound on or off, press the <S> key while holding down
  180.     the <CTRL> key.

  182. 12. To set the autoturn mode on, which will allow the pages to turn
  183.     automatically after a delay of about half a minute (read the
  184.     "iView Settings" section for information about how change this
  185.     delay), press the <A> key while holding down the <CTRL> key.
  186.     This autoturn mode will end if you click the mouse's left button
  187.     or if any key is pressed.  The direction of the page turn will
  188.     depend on the direction of the last page turn before the autoturn
  189.     mode was initiated.

  194. 5. iView Settings
  195.    ==============

  197. This section is meant ONLY for users who have some understanding of
  198. how to modify Windows 3.1* .INI files, and who NEED to change the
  199. default settings of iView for some reason.  For most users, iView's
  200. default settings will be satisfactory.
  201.  
  202. iView will look for users' preferred settings stored in a file named
  203. IVIEW.INI in the following order:
  204. 1. The user's Windows directory.
  205. 2. iView's current working directory.
  206.  
  207. If you do a full installation of iView onto your harddisk, the setup
  208. program will automatically configure and copy a IVIEW.INI file to
  209. your Windows directory.  You may modify the settings in this file to
  210. suit your needs.
  211.  
  212. If you choose the Install Publication Icon option during the setup
  213. process, no IVIEW.INI file will be copied over to your machine.  If
  214. you still wish to manually change the iView settings, you must first
  215. copy the IVIEW.INI file that is found in the VWORLD directory at the
  216. root of the publication CDROM to your Windows directory.

  218. The following is an explanation of the profile strings in the
  219. IVIEW.INI file.  Values shown in all capitals are the default.  Please
  220. do NOT change the values of strings that are not documented in this
  221. readme file.
